August 22, 2012

A new flagship model for the COOLPIX series equipped with a fast NIKKOR lens with maximum aperture of f/2–4 and a 1/1.7-in. backside illumination CMOS sensor

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the P7700, a high-performance compact digital camera loaded with a number of functions that allow users to enjoy full-scale photography similar to that possible with a digital-SLR camera.

COOLPIX P7700(Black)

The P7700 is the newest flagship model for the COOLPIX series. It supports full-scale manual photography as well as system expansion, allowing users to brush up on their camera techniques that digital-SLR cameras require. The P7700 is the successor to the P7100, released in September 2011, and offers a number of advances over its predecessor, including faster continuous shooting and even better image quality with shooting at high sensitivities. It is equipped with a large 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor, and a fast NIKKOR lens that supports 7.1x optical zoom. Its built-in lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function increases imaging opportunities by enabling capture of not only beautiful still images, but also crisp and clear full-HD movies in dark or dimly lit surroundings.

The bright and fast NIKKOR lens supports 7.1x optical zoom covering a range of focal lengths from 28 mm to 200 mm (equivalents in 35-mm [135] format) and offering maximum apertures of f/2–4. It also supports macro photography from distances as close as approximately 2 cm, as well as fast telephoto shooting. What's more, it offers excellent rendering for beautiful expression of blur. The combination of this high-performance lens and the 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 12.2-million pixels enables even better image quality with shooting at high sensitivities, and high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 8 fps*1. The P7700 is also equipped with a movie custom setting mode with which settings such as shutter speed and ISO sensitivity can be specified, making the most of the advantages and capabilities of the fast lens and backside illumination CMOS sensor, for even more ways to express yourself through full-HD movies with superior picture quality. The camera also supports a number of accessories that extend possibilities and increase flexibility with shooting in a variety of situations, including Nikon Speedlights*2, which can be used for multiple flash-unit photography with Advanced Wireless Lighting, the GPS Unit GP-1, which records position information with images as they are captured, and the Remote Cord MC-DC2, which makes releasing the shutter easier when the camera is mounted on a tripod (accessories sold separately).

  • *1At a setting of Continuous H with image size and quality settings of 12M/NORM (JPEG).
  • *2The SB-910, SB-700, and SB-R200 can be used as remote flashes. When the SB-R200 is used, the attachment ring (SX-1) cannot be used; use of the speedlight stand (AS-20) is recommended.

COOLPIX P7700 Primary Features

1. Bright and fast NIKKOR zoom lens supporting 7.1x optical zoom for coverage of 28-mm to 200-mm focal lengths (equivalent in 35-mm [135] format) and maximum apertures of f/2–4

This fast lens offers a maximum aperture of f/2 at the wide-angle position and f/4 at the telephoto position, and makes full use of its built-in vibration reduction function and the camera's noise reduction capabilities for superior, sharp image quality throughout the entire zoom range. In addition to enabling even better image quality with shooting in dark or dimly lit surroundings, this high-performance lens is equipped with a 7-blade iris diaphragm that ensures rounded blur characteristics that are more natural for more beautiful images. In addition, macro photography as close as approximately 2 cm is possible at the wide-angle position.

2. 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 12.2-million pixels

The P7700 is equipped with a 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor with high-speed performance that supports technologies enabling automatic overlay of multiple images captured in rapid succession for less noise in photographs taken at high sensitivities. This same high-speed performance also enables continuous shooting at approximately 8 fps*.

  • *At a setting of Continuous H with image size and quality settings of 12M/NORM (JPEG)

3. Recording of full-HD movies with stereo sound and a new movie custom setting mode

In addition to the increased picture quality and less noise with recording of dark or dimly lit scenes made possible by the camera's fast NIKKOR lens and backside illumination CMOS sensor, the P7700 is equipped with a new movie custom setting mode with which settings such as shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity can be manually specified to achieve the desired results.

4. Support for a variety of accessories for superior system expansion

The P7700 supports Advanced Wireless Lighting, a part of the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), which allows for the creative utilization of light to emphasize subjects and create more beautiful photos. Advanced Wireless Lighting enables control over master and remote flash units for more creative flash photography.
In addition, the flash built into the P7700 is equipped with a commander mode function*1, enabling remote control over a single remote Speedlight*2 using the built-in flash rather than a clip-on Speedlight. The P7700 also boasts excellent system expansion with support for a number of other accessories, including the GPS Unit GP-1, which records position information with images, the Remote Cord MC-DC2, which makes releasing the shutter more convenient when the camera is mounted on a tripod, the new Lens Hood HN-CP17 with an integrated filter adapter for attaching filters without a separate adapter, and the 40.5mm screw-on filter 40.5 NC (all accessories mentioned here available separately).

  • *1The built-in flash emits low-level flashes used for wireless control over an optional remote Speedlight.
  • *2The SB-910, SB-700, and SB-R200 can be used as remote flashes. When the SB-R200 is used, the attachment ring (SX-1) cannot be used; use of the speedlight stand (AS-20) is recommended.

5. 3-inch vari-angle TFT LCD monitor with wide viewing angle

The P7700 is equipped with a bright, ultra high-resolution LCD monitor with wide viewing angle that faithfully reproduces colors. It opens 0–180° to the left, and when opened, can be rotated 90° clockwise or 180° counter-clockwise for more convenient viewing with shooting from difficult angles.

6. Special effects that can be applied with shooting

The P7700 offers a variety of special effects that can be enabled prior to shooting to achieve more varied and creative expression with recording of still images or movies. A total of ten special effects are available, including Cross Process, which creates images with unusual hues by converting a positive color image into a negative color image or vice versa, Zoom Exposure, which uses zoom to create dynamic pictures radiating out from the center, and Defocus During Exposure, which adjusts focus during exposure for a softening effect.

7. Designed for comfortable and natural operation

The P7700 offers smooth operation with a lightweight, yet durable, magnesium alloy body, and a simple design with intuitive positioning of operational dials and buttons.
