Nikon releases the MAR-MX60A-MF, multi-turn battery-free absolute encoder and the MAR-MX60A, multi-turn absolute encoder
For various modules utilized in industrial applications
November 20, 2019
TOKYO - Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the MAR-MX60A-MF, multi-turn battery-free absolute encoder and the MAR-MX60A, multi-turn absolute encoder.
Utilizing a Nikon proprietary technology, the MAR-MX60A-MF achieves a battery-free operating feature and maintains rotational velocity even if main power is lost. This battery-free function contributes to improved maintenance-ability and reduced operating costs.
The MAR-MX60A boasts a guaranteed temperature of 105°C which is the highest temperature of Nikon encoders ever and enhances the flexibility in the design of motors and equipment. Both models can be utilized for various modules for industrial use. Nikon will continue to enhance our lineup to meet user needs.
Nikon plans to showcase both models at SPS 2019 (Smart Production Solutions 2019, November 26–28, 2019 in Nuremberg, Germany) and IIFES 2019 (Innovative Industry Fair for E × E Solutions 2019, November 27–29, 2019 at Tokyo Big Sight).

Availability | April 2020 (planned) |
Main Features
1. Achieves low-profile equivalent to conventional models while incorporating battery-free feature (MAR-MX60A-MF)
The multi-turn absolute encoder maintains the motor rotation count by supplying power from the battery to the encoder even after the equipment stops when the power supply from the equipment stops. Due to the need for regular maintenance such as battery replacement, the demand for “battery-free encoders” that do not require batteries has increased in recent years.
The MAR-MX60A-MF is a breakthrough absolute encoder product that achieves low-profile equivalent to conventional models while incorporating battery-free feature with utilizing a Nikon proprietary technology. This means existing encoders can be easily replaced with this model without major design changes.
2. Guaranteed maximum operating temperature of 105°C (MAR-MX60A)
The MAR-MX60A achieves a guaranteed maximum operating temperature of 105°C. By offering higher operating-environment resistance, this model enhances the flexibility in the design of motors and equipment.
3. Outstanding maximum 27-bit high resolution for each turn (both models)
Each turn features a maximum resolution of 27-bit (134,217,728 positions/rev.). Enabling precise positioning and contributing greatly to the improvement of velocity control stability.
4. A-format® bidirectional full-serial communication comes standard (both models)
Equipped as standard with A-format®* bidirectional full-serial communication for two-way communication between the controller and encoder. Encoder-processed motor state monitoring is converted to A-format® for data sending and receiving, contributing to greater equipment and motor precision as well as high-speed control. By utilizing this communication protocol, which is succeeded to existing models as well, Nikon increases the range of motors available to customers.
- * A-format® is a registered trademark of the Nikon Corporation.
