Reasons for selection of the D7100 for the Best D-SLR Advanced award
(TIPA comments)
The DX format Nikon D7100 has a new DX format CMOS sensor, an effective pixel count of 24.1-million pixels and 51-point AF system, including 15 cross-type sensors. The D7100 can record up to 6 frames per second at full resolution, with an additional frame in the rate (at slightly lower resolution) when using the new 1.3X crop mode. The impressive 3.2-inch LCD has an equally impressive 1,229K RGB dot resolution, excellent for both still and HD video recording. Along with numerous Picture Controls and Effects (available to both still and video shooters) as well as advanced photo features, the durable magnesium alloy cover construction and a 150k cycle shutter elevate this camera to the advanced class.
Reasons for selection of the COOLPIX S01 for the Best Easy Compact Camera award
(TIPA comments)
The diminutive 10.1 MP, S01 has a 1/2.9-inch CCD image sensor and incorporates a 3X NIKKOR zoom lens that yields a focal length equivalent of 29 to 87mm (equivalents in 35-mm [135] format). Weighing in at a mere approximately 96 g and measuring approximately 51.2mm high, 77mm wide, and 17.2mm deep, the camera delivers a shutter speed range of 1-1/2000 seconds, an ISO range of 80-1600, and can also record HD video in MOV mode (MPEG-4 and AVC/H.264). In offers numerous scene modes and in-camera special effects editing plus exposure compensation in +/-2EV. Exposure is programmed Auto, as befits an "easy" compact that is eminently portable.
Reasons for selection of the COOLPIX P520 for the Best Superzoom Camera award
(TIPA comments)
The 42X optical zoom NIKKOR lens in the COOLPIX P520 delivers up to
1000mm (equivalents in 35mm [135] format), coverage with built-in lens-shift VR (Vibration Reduction). The backside illumination CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 18.1-million pixels has an ISO range of 80-3200, with "push" sensitivities available in certain modes. There are numerous scene and creative modes, plus the P520 allow the user to create movie with a host of resolution options, including Full HD.
Close focusing begins at approximately 50cm at the wide end and approximately 2.0m at the tele end of the zoom range, plus there's a macro setting of approximately 1cm at wide. A 3.2-inch, vari-angle approximately 921-k dot LCD monitor makes for clear viewing with approximately 100% coverage.
Reasons for selection of the 1 NIKKOR 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 for the Best CSC Entry Level Lens award
(TIPA comments)
Made for all Nikon 1 Compact System cameras, the equally compact 1 NIKKOR 11-27.5mm lens (equivalent to 30-74mm in 35mm [135] format) measures approximately 57.5 x 31mm (distance from camera lens mount flange when lens is retracted) and weighs approximately only 83 g. With 8 elements in 6 groups, a 7-bladed diaphragm and 1 ED and 1 aspherical element, the lens offers focusing as close as 0.3m from focal plane at all zoom positions. Combining with the retractable lens mechanism, this lens adds little to the camera weight or size when carried or in action, making it an ideal companion lens with eminent portability.
